Celebrating International Women's Day with Boho Betty!

Did you know that March 8th marks International Women’s Day?

Today we want to take the time to highlight the importance of this day, celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, all whilst raising awareness for a better, more inclusive world for women to exist and thrive in.

We’re championing women and International Women’s Day within our community here at Boho Betty, and want you to get involved too! Together, we can #InspireInclusion and rally for women’s equality.

What is International Women’s Day (IWD)?

Every March 8th, IWD is an important day to celebrate women’s achievements, educate and raise awareness, call for positive change, lobby and fundraise.

This year, the theme is to Inspire Inclusion. IWD defines that by:

“This year's campaign theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality. It calls for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected. Inspire Inclusion encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalised communities.”

But these endeavours should not be reduced to one day a year - this day is important for highlighting the amazing efforts of women all year round!

Origins of IWD

The first IWD gathering was held back in 1911 - over 100 years ago. However, women’s efforts have been recognised dating back to 1908, during a time where there was great unrest and critical debate occurring amongst the women in the world.

The importance of IWD

This day is so important as it marks a clear call to action, and the need for change in the world - change that still needs to happen.

It is about women’s equality in all forms, women’s advancement, and women’s rights. Again, IWD highlights that:

“For some, IWD is about fighting for women's rights. For others, IWD is about reinforcing key commitments, while for some IWD is about celebrating success. And for others, IWD means festive gatherings and parties. Whatever choices are made, all choices matter, and all choices are valid. All choices of activity can contribute to, and form part of, the thriving global movement focused on women's advancement.”
