Here at Boho Betty, we use rhodium plating in some of our jewellery ranges and collections, like our earrings and necklaces. But we understand that some of you might not know what that means, particularly for the collections you all know and love.

What is rhodium plated jewellery?
Jewellery is generally made from a base of gold or silver, or another alloy. Rhodium plating is when a thin layer of rhodium is coated on top, often for extra strength and protection.
What are the benefits of rhodium plating?
From an aesthetics perspective, rhodium plating adds a highly reflective, shiny, lustrous appearance to the jewellery. Not only is it shinier, but it is also more durable than other materials as well, increasing its overall longevity. You will find that it doesn’t scratch, dent or corrode!
Lastly, rhodium plating is also hypoallergenic, meaning it reduces the risk of skin irritation or allergic reactions, making it safe for most people to wear.
Is rhodium plating better than sterling silver?
We love both materials here at Boho Betty, but there are different advantages to rhodium plating compared to sterling silver.
Due to the higher purity rating, rhodium is substantially more durable than sterling silver. With both offering a luxurious, elegant finish, some will find this material is better if wearing jewellery for longer.
How long does rhodium plating last?
To ensure your jewellery lasts, there are a few care tips to consider. Rhodium plating doesn’t tarnish, so you don’t need to worry about complex/harsh cleaning routines.
So when it comes to cleaning, you should only use warm water and a mild liquid soap - avoiding any harsh chemicals or polishes. Use a soft polishing cloth afterwards.
